Ever since Sony launched the PlayStation 5 (PS5) and ushered in a new generation of games, the latest gaming platform’s popularity has grown from strength to strength. The all new and all powerful PS5 has armed game developers with the power to take complexity and realism to the next level. There are a number of RPGs that push the platform’s limits by taking advantage of the DualSense controller’s enhanced tactile feel and stunning graphics capabilities. These sunning improvements have allowed the players to have a more immersive game playing experience. They feel as if they are actually the game’s protagonist taking on the enemies and fighting vicious battles. In this post, we will take a look at the best RPGs for the PS5. Let’s get started.
Best RPGs For PS5: All You Need To Know
Cyberpunk 2077
Cyberpunk 2077’s PS4 release was a disaster. Due to poor quality, the game was pulled from the PlayStation Store for several months and then re-released with a patch and next-gen update. Thanks to the release of the next-generation edition of the game, Cyberpunk 2077 can now take its place as one of the best PlayStation 5 RPGs.
It’s up to you to explore Night City as V, navigating a world where corporations rule and everyone is after themselves, often at the expense of others. When your heist goes awry, you’re running out of time and your mind is being taken over by a rock star terrorist à la Keanu Reeves.
If the story isn’t intriguing enough, you can go around town beating up people with a baseball bat instead. Cyberpunk 2077 is an excellent RPG if you want to play a bastard.
Mass Effect: Legendary Edition
Why settle for one of the best RPGs of all time when you can have three?
The Mass Effect: Legendary Collection, as its name suggests, takes all of the material from the original trilogy and expands it to make it the definitive edition of one of gaming’s greatest works. Even if the finale of Mass Effect 3 isn’t quite as well done, it’s still worth the trip.
The significant revision of Mass Effect 1, the oldest part of the series, is the main feature of the collection. The new version features improved gameplay and shooting mechanics, and the entire trilogy has been combined in a way that makes it easier for players to take their own Shepard from game to game. Mass Effect: Legendary Collection will keep you entertained for a long time with hundreds of hours of game material.
Elden Ring
FromSoftware’s remarkable work over the past decade has culminated in the Elden Ring. While the game is still challenging, it feels more like a friendly and welcoming RPG, cementing its status as the best PS5 RPG you can buy compared to titles like Dark Souls and Bloodborne.
As in many Souls-like games, you take control of a “chosen” individual with the power to survive death and fight your way through the devastated environment, defeating multiple enemies along the way.
As an open-world role-playing game, you have unlimited flexibility in shaping your adventure, and you can definitely travel to a different location to boost your powers so you can defeat the larger monsters later.
Horizon Forbidden West
It’s always a pleasure to see when big IPs live up to expectations, and Horizon Forbidden West most certainly does. For Aloy, the massive, sprawling epic Horizon Zero Dawn was just the beginning of her journey. Therefore, she must now go in search of answers in the Forbidden West before the continent collapses and humanity is lost forever.
To say that this game is breathtakingly beautiful would be an understatement. Forbidden West is a marked improvement over the original game in almost every way, and you now have the chance to find out what happened to the Golden Gate Bridge. If you thought the backstory in the original game was huge, then just wait until you see what this new, epic chapter has in store for you. Everything has been revised. And to be perfectly honest, we wouldn’t have it any other way.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
It may have taken a while, but The Witcher 3 has finally arrived on the PlayStation 5 console. As Geralt of Rivia, a monster hunter known as The Witcher, you travel across cities and vast plains in search of his adopted daughter in this fascinating tale of Slavic folklore.
The Witcher 3 is available now on all platforms, which means there’s never been a better time to grab this classic. There’s a reason Netflix made a TV show out of it, and that’s because Geralt’s Adventure is such an ambitious story at its core. The game is visually stunning and there is a wealth of content to explore set in the richest mythology a game has to offer.
Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut
The dramatic tale of Jin Sakai, a samurai who must decide if it’s worth holding on to his crumbling morale while trying to preserve his land, comes to life in Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut by director Takashi Miike.
In this open-world RPG, you’ll ride through the world, engage in duels, learn secrets, and unlock powerful new abilities as you try to survive against all odds.
Final Fantasy XIV
While most role-playing games focus on the story of a single character saving the world, massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) allow players to engage in epic battles and stories with their friends. There are quite a few MMORPGs for the PlayStation 5, but Final Fantasy XIV is undeniably the biggest. The game turns the legendary RPG series into a popular MMO. The PS5 version in particular gives the game that next-gen feel.
Although Final Fantasy XIV requires a subscription to fully play the game and there is a ton of additional material to purchase, you will get hundreds of hours of gameplay tied up once you get the Final Fantasy XIV fever.
There’s a free trial that lets you level up your characters up to level 60, and it even includes the first expansion, Heavensward, if you’re not quite hooked on the game yet. FFXIV is an excellent MMO and almost the best RPG available for the PlayStation 5.
Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade
When it comes to Final Fantasy games, there’s no denying that Intergrade is the icing on the cake. No doubt there will be some fans who will not be happy with some changes in the remake as it only offers part of the story. But the game has enough Final Fantasy VII charm to be worth playing. When it comes to character reinterpretations or awesome boss fights (and great combat system), Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is a satisfying experience – especially for those who like to relive their youth.
Demon’s Souls (Remake)
It’s amazing what a decade of outstanding games and a loyal fan base can do for a brand – from obscure PS3 exclusive to true console bestseller.
Since their initial release, FromSoftware’s titles have become huge hits, boosting the popularity of games like Demon’s Souls. Even if the game wasn’t a huge success on the PS3, Bluepoint has brought it to the current PS5 and made it one of the most important PS5 games.
Fans of the original game will be pleased to know that Demon’s Souls is almost identical to the PS3 version, with improved graphics, performance, and sound design. On the other hand, Bluepoint has introduced a number of new features and modes that make Demon’s Souls a much more complete RPG. It’s challenging, but Demon’s Souls is an essential PS5 RPG.
Yakuza: Like A Dragon
The decision to switch the Yakuza series from a beat ’em up to a classic JRPG was undoubtedly unusual, but Yakuza: Like A Dragon is an excellent refresher on the long-running series.
Yakuza: Like A Dragon might sound familiar if you’ve played turn-based RPGs like Dragon Quest before, but it still has enough of the usual yakuza flair and absurdity not to feel like too big a change.
Yakuza: Like A Dragon focuses on the series’ protagonist, Ichiban Kasuga. He spends a long time in prison after being falsely accused of a crime he did not commit. Believing that his yakuza clan would be waiting for him when he gets out, Ichiban is released 18 years later and finds himself completely alone. Of course, this is unacceptable, so Ichiban recruits some friends to find out what really happened.
Nioh 2
“The world is on fire, and Nioh 2 delivers a journey that gives us confidence in a brighter future.” That’s a really good summary of the situation. In this prequel to the original Nioh, you take on the role of Hide, a yokai (demon hunter) whose life is turned upside down when he meets Tokichiro, a spirit stone merchant.
If you are interested in Japanese history and mythology, you will surely like the graphic style and story of Nioh 2. Since the first version, the game has been significantly improved, so now the journey is much smoother and more beautiful. There is a wide variety of combinations for RPG fans to experiment with the skill trees and create a unique experience for each player.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance
Kingdom Come: Deliverance is an excellent game for medieval lovers. Developed by Warhorse Studios, the action role-playing game is set in the Kingdom of Bohemia, an imperial state of the Holy Empire. The game aims to provide historically accurate content and is set during a war in Bohemia in 1403. Kingdom Come: Deliverance follows a blacksmith’s son on his quest for revenge for the unjust killing of his villagers. During his journey, he organizes a resistance movement against the king with the aim of restoring the rightful leader to the throne.
Lost Judgment
The Yakuza series offers excellent real-time battles and role-playing games in a current but absurd scenario, thanks to Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s pioneering work in developing good and addictive modern RPGs. Even though the Yakuza series broke new ground, Judgment still stands for traditional beat ’em up action, and Lost Judgment has earned its place as one of the best PS5 RPGs.
As private investigator Takayuki Yagami, you travel between the iconic locations of the yakuza series Kamurocho and Isezaki Ijincho to solve a difficult case involving suicide, bullying and possible murder.
Three different combat techniques are available to you on your investigations, each focusing on a different form of combat. Crane excels at crowd control, Tiger dominates one-on-one combat, and Snake relies on counterattacks. You also go undercover at a school, playing a series of mini-games that distract you from the main storyline.
Scarlet Nexus
Scarlet Nexus is perhaps the best game when it comes to creating one of the most unique and immersive environments in gaming history. Scarlet Nexus is one of the best PS5 RPGs because it’s just so weird and weird.
You are immersed in a world where scientific development focuses on the human brain, in a retro futuristic parallel reality commonly referred to as “Brainpunk”. Essentially, you get awesome psychokinetic abilities, which is awesome.
You can play as either Yuito Sumeragi or Kasane Randall, both members of the Other Suppression Force, in this dual narrative game. As OSF members, you are tasked with defending the city of New Himuka, which is regularly attacked by monsters. Luckily, your psychokinetic abilities will help you with this, which you can use to improve the abilities of you and your party members.
Genshin Impact
Exploring a vast anime-inspired universe is always appealing, so it’s no wonder Genshin Impact is so popular. Of course, the gacha-style monetization model isn’t for everyone, especially if you don’t want to spend a lot of money on another free-to-play game, but Genshin Impact is a solid choice if you want to experience an immersive action RPG.
You play as a nameless traveler in the fantasy world of Teyvat who gets caught up in a battle between the seven regions of the world. Each location has its own element and deity, giving the planet its own personality as you travel. To see it all, you must switch identities and use various powers to defeat enemies, solve puzzles, and more.
Tales of Arise
Tales of Arise is a good choice if you’re a fan of role-playing games with a strong focus on storytelling and character development. There has been a longstanding conflict between Dahna and the technologically advanced conquerors of Rena, and you are caught in the middle.
Video games that can achieve the narrative and emotional complexity of a novel are remarkable achievements. You will surely fall in love with the characters and the storyline that is as old as time itself. Both RPG and Anime fans will enjoy Tales of Arise as the game features excellent combat, characters and storytelling.
Greedfall
In Greedfall, a medieval fantasy RPG, players are thrust into the middle of a conflict between magical factions and are given the power and freedom to determine the fate of an entire island.
You play as De Sardet, a nobleman of the Merchant Congregation who travels to the newly settled island of Teer Fradee to help the Congregation find their new city while searching for a cure for a mysterious disease. However, a mystical group of natives, as well as representatives of two other countries, already live on the island, and the decisions you make will have great consequences.
Disco Elysium: The Final Cut
Disco Elysium is a fantastic role-playing game. As an officer with amnesia, you interrogate the villagers and try to figure out who the hell you are while attempting to solve a highly suspicious murder. As you explore the mysterious metropolis of Revachol on your own, you’ll find that Disco Elysium is an immersive game from start to finish. Not everyone will like the slow pace, but if you’re looking for a challenging and thought-provoking role-playing game, then this PS5 game is for you.
Outriders
There are many other RPGs out there, but Outriders is the best RPG shooter out there. Outriders is both a third-person shooter and an RPG. You can choose from a variety of classes, each with unique abilities and attributes. You can have a lot of fun with your talents, not just with weapons. Pyromancers often attack with flames, while Tricksters use their ability to bend time and space to their advantage on close-range attacks.
We’re not going to pretend this is a good story. You play this RPG because you like RPGs. That means you enjoy leveling up, developing your character, and collecting and upgrading stuff in your games. Like Destiny 2, Outriders is very weapon and armor-heavy, but unlike a live service game, it’s not designed for you to play for long. When you reach the top level of the game and complete everything it has to offer, you will feel a sense of accomplishment. Thankfully, the game has been patched since its release and now plays much smoother and is also playable in co-op.
Dying Light 2 Stay Human
Dying Light 2 Stay Human is an action-survival RPG with horror elements developed by Techland. The game takes place in an open world 22 years after the events of the original Dying Light and has a completely different protagonist than the previous game in Aiden Caldwell. Caldwell must traverse the zombie-infested metropolis using his various parkour talents, which include climbing, sliding, jumping off ledges and sprinting. Some other tools like a grappling hook and a paraglider are useful for exploring the vast environment in Dying Light 2 Stay Human.
So those were some of the best PS5 RPGs available today. Which ones have you played already and which are the ones that are next on the horizon?
