How To Outline Text in Photoshop: All You Need to Know

Adobe Photoshop is the most widely used photo editing software in the world. It’s used by both amateurs and pros. While amateurs just skim the surface of the incredible number of features in Photoshop, pros take advantage of the seemingly endless list of features in Photoshop. One of the things that both pros and amateurs will need to do in Photoshop, is outlining text. In this post, we will find out how you can do it. Let’s get started.

How to Outline Text in Photoshop: Steps to Follow

Step 1 – Create a new canvas/ Open your document

Open the file you want to edit or create a new canvas of the size that you require. After doing that, choose the type tool in the tool bar on the left side of the screen.

Step 2 – Create your type layer

Now that you’ve selected the type tool, go ahead and click on the canvas. This will make a new type layer and start displaying a placeholder text. Now you can type the text that you need.

Step 3 – Decide your font and text size

The default font will depend on what font you’ve used previously. Alter your font, text size and position based on how you want it. You can also change the font colour so that it contrasts with the text outline.

Step 4 – Add a layer style

You can select the layer style using the small “fx” icon at the bottom of the layers panel.

Step 5 – Add your stroke

Now, you should be able to see a dialogue box which contains stroke options. In this box, you can decide the size, stroke position, blend mode, opacity, fill type and colour. Play around with the settings and try out everything before you make a decision. Select the size, position and colour.

Step 6 – Remove your fill

This isn’t a mandatory step for you to outline text on Photoshop. But removing the fill helps you see the text outline more clearly. You can do this by selecting your type layer and setting the fill to 0%.

Step 7 – Add another stroke

Photoshop allows users to have multiple layer effects within the same layer. If you want two different stroke effects within the same layer and, click on the plus icon located next to “stroke” in the styles list. This will result in the second stroke effect.

Since these effects are layered, the lower effect needs to be positioned in a manner that is visible and not obscured from the top effect. Before you decide, play around with other options with both stroke layers and come up with new looks.

Step 8 – Finish your outlined text in Photoshop

You will finally have your outlined text in Photoshop. You can still change the text and stroke effects as much as you want, so these changes aren’t final. Hopefully, you know how to add outlines to your text in Photoshop now. As you might’ve noticed while reading the blog, it isn’t really that difficult.
