You sold your old PlayStation 4, the deal has been successful, and for now, the console is in the hands of the new owner. However, one dilemma has arisen: Did you leave your account active on the old PS4? If so, the other person could freely access your data – a big no no! In any case, do not despair as in this article, we will talk about how to deactivate PS4 successfully. We will look at how to disable the main PS4 account both from the console and remotely (using PC or mobile devices).
How To Deactivate PS4: Step By Step Guide
The easiest method to disable the main PS4 account is to take advantage of the specific functionality implemented in the Sony console.
- Deleting an account from PlayStation 4 is very simple: just go to the Settings menu > Login Settings> User Management and select the Delete User item.
- Now, press the user you want to delete and press the X button of the notepad on the writing Delete, yes and accept.
- Great, you have now successfully deleted the account.
However, in some cases, the method explained may only work with profiles not set as primary. So if you want to sell your console or ditch the main account, all you need to do is run a factory reset directly, to get the console back just like when you bought it.
- Before proceeding to restore the PS4, it is good to remove the association of the console from your account by removing any connection. To do this, just log into the main account > toolbar above and press the controller X button on the settings icon.
- After that, select Account management and Activate as primary PS4, press the pad X button on the deactivate voice and lastly press the yes button and you’re done!
In case your PS4 has never been activated as the main one, it is recommended to activate and deactivate it immediately afterwards. By doing it this way, you will ensure that you correctly delete all data. If you have done so then now the PS4 is no longer the main one and therefore will not be associated with your account.
- Once this is done, it would say that you are ready to proceed with the system initialization. Well, to do this, just go to the Settings menu > Restore the console and press on the Initialize the PS4 item.
- After that, you just need to select the writing in full succession, select restore, and select yes.
By doing so, PlayStation 4 will erase all the data and accounts present inside it and you can safely resell it. To make sure nothing is left inside the PS4, you can also try doing the initial setup and setting up a local account.
How to deactivate PS4 account without PS4
Perhaps you may have already sold the PlayStation 4 but forgot to deactivate the main account set up on the console. In that case, this is how to remove the association remotely, so that the person you sold the console to won’t be able to access your data.
The easiest way to remotely deactivate a PlayStation 4 system is to go through the official Sony portal. Clearly, in this case, we are talking about an account connected to PlayStation Network, since unfortunately not much can be done regarding local accounts.
To continue, you must connect to the official Sony website and log into your PlayStation Network account by entering your email address and password in the appropriate fields and pressing the Login button.
At this point, press the Device Management item present at the bottom left, select the writing PlayStation Systems (Games) and press the button to Disable all devices.
You can only deactivate all the devices on your account once every 6 months.
Obviously, all consoles associated with your account will be deactivated and you will need to log in again, but this is the only way to remove the previously sold PlayStation 4 pairing.
How to deactivate PS4 (main account) from a phone
There is, of course, the possibility to change the nickname of the PSN through the official PlayStation App for mobile phones and tablets.
Again, we are clearly talking about online accounts connected to the PlayStation Network, as unfortunately not much can be done remotely to disassociate the local profiles established on a console.
Therefore, to continue, you must download the PlayStation application on your device by opening the Play Store (if you have an Android device ) or the App Store (if you have an iPhone or iPad ), search for » PlayStation application «.
Inside this, press the application icon (the white PlayStation logo on a blue background) in the search results.
Now, tap on the Install / Get item and if you are using iOS, verify your identity via Face ID, Touch ID or Apple ID password.
Once you have started the PlayStation application and logged in with your PlayStation Network account, press the account icon present at the bottom right and simply select the entry Edit profile in Privacy settings.
After that, press the ☰ icon located at the top left and tap on the Device Management item. Then you just need to select the writing PlayStation Systems (Games) and press the button first Disable all devices and then select yes.
As you have probably already guessed, this operation will disassociate all the consoles you own from your account and therefore you will have to associate them again for future use.
This is the one and only method to remotely deactivate the already sold PS4. You can only deactivate all the devices on your account once every 6 months.
Now that you have successfully disassociated the console and managed to deactivate PS4 from your account, the person you sold it to will no longer be able to access your data.
